Classic Hits

Thank-you Christian. On Wednesday 22 May the radio station Classic Hits came to Maraekakaho School Room 5. I'm thanking Christian because his mother Natasha signed him in on a competition. The competition was if you enter on the internet or call Classic Hits you could win freebies for your own class room. The freebies were free vouchers for MacDonalds, Napier and the Aquarium in Napier. We all had the chance to ask Martin and Sarah some questions like whereabouts is your radio station and what sort of music did they play on their radio station. We also had the chance to win a free Kmart voucher. To win the Kmart voucher, Martin and Sarah would throw a dart at a piece of paper with all of our names on it and whoevers name it lands on wins the Kmart voucher. It was so much fun.

Reading Is Fun

Starting on Wednesday the 15th of May we started doing some awesome readers theatre. Readers theatre is a programme that's like doing a play but we are practising our fluency and having fun at the same time. In readers theatre we get to get into our reading groups, that are Concentrating Coconuts, the Unknown, Reading Robots and the Go Girls. Groups sometimes get teamed up to do the exciting stories Mrs B gives us. In readers theatre there are a few habits of mind involved to make it successful like thinking interdependently when we are choosing parts and sorting it out. We have to communicate with clarity and precision when we are saying our parts and managing impulsivity to stay focused while you are doing it so you know when its your turn to come in with your part. There are many more too. Our whole class got together to form criteria about what would make all of this successful.

Let's Get Fit

At the start term 2 Mark Atkins started coming in and doing P.E. with us. The P.E is a mixture of basketball, passing techniques, soccer, dribbling and rugby. Every class does P.E. with Mark at least once a week. Mark is in the Magpies training squad and very experienced with rugby. In my opinion this was a very smart idea because the students of MKK school are getting fit but having fun at the same time and what makes it even better is that Mark is a really awesome guy who uses all the habits of mind!

MATHS

For maths every day we do some different stuff.  Mrs Beachamp introduced two new games. They were about adding up and finding different ways to make the number. Our group went through three sheets in one session. There is a number trail where you have to use the numbers to equal the target number. These games are awesome and fun.

Esplanade

Aaah. A relaxing walk through native bushes, plants and trees. We were strolling to the esplanade to have a good half hour in the playground. Aaaah, as kids screamed going down the flying fox. This playground was a kids dream! It was wonderful, original, fantastical! There was a huge flying fox you either stand up or sit down on it. Now this one's suprising. They had hampster wheels! One big one and one small one. I think this one was my favourite toy. It was like big walkie talkies with satellite dishes at the end of them. The two of them were quite far apart. You would talk into a dark green curved pipe and you would hear it through the other pipe.

CURRENT EVENTS

Every Monday morning we do a current events quiz where we get quizzed on all of the latest news. There are twenty questions. Some are hard and some are easy. The questions are interesting and you learn a lot of things from the quizzes. Afterwards we pick one question and we research the topic. There  also are questions like who's in the picture and what flag is this.

MATHLETICS

I glance up at the maths board under cubes and pyramids. Yesss! We're on Mathletics today. A main focus in maths is Mathletics. Each session we have at least one group on. Mathletics is a online website where you can challenge people from all over the world. You can also focus on topics like geometry, statistics and heaps more. I think that mathletics is a motivational website encouraging kids to love learning!

The Rugby Museum

For those who didn't come to the Year 5 and 6 camp you missed out on a lot of fun. One of the fun things was the visit to the Rugby Museum. There was a really cool part where you get to have a go at the scrum machine, sprints, kicking and tackling bags. The high score for the scrum machine was made by a Georgian rugby player in 2011.

WE DECIDED TO CHOOSE WHAT JOBS TO HAVE. EACH PERSON GOT TO HAVE TWO OR THREE JOBS TO DO. WE HAD TO DO ALL THE JOBS BEFORE THE BELL RANG AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL DAY.

CAMP DESSERT

A great way to celebrate Annabel McCallum's birthday was to treat everyone with a mouthwatering dessert. As we sang happy birthday we gazed upon ice-cream, syrups, marshmallows, sprinkles and other wonderful treats. We were sitting down on the grass with our bowl and spoon all eager to dig in. Finally the adults started calling people up. C-rrrr you could hear the cream piling up. And the syrups melting down the ice-cream. Now thats what I call scrumdidliumpcious!!!

LIDO

Yay! We are going to the Lido. For those who don't know, the Lido is like Splash Planet but it is in Palmerston North. There are swimming pools, hydro slides and the hydro slide is black all the whole way down. There is also an aqua run. That is an obstacle course on the water. I rate this swimming center 10/10

CAMP-SCAVENGER HUNT

Week Six, the C.O.K.E.S and MKK All Stars went to camp. We left on the 13 of March and returned on the 15 of March. One of my favourite activities on camp was the amazing race around the Palmerston North square. This activity took place on Day 2 of camp. We had to run around and look for specific statues and complete a list of tasks. Some of those tasks were: buy a costume for your group from the $2 shop, get a picture of someone in your group wearing the ugliest piece of clothing you could find and find a feather and the roundest stone possible. There were a lot more on the list. Everybody enjoyed the scavenger hunt around the square. It was my very first scavenger hunt and I really enjoyed it!

OUR CLASS

We are the C.O.K.E.S. the concentrated, organised, knowledgeable, energised solvers of 2013. We are always enthusiastic towards learning. We use the H.O.Ms when unsure or unclear of how to complete tasks. Our one goal for 2013 is to step up and be great leaders, great thinkers and independent learners.
